The fifth novel in the DI Buchan series, WE WERE NOT INNOCENT, will be released on 11th December 2023.

Observers have noted the date has been pushed back from the originally scheduled 23rd November. Reports coming out of new Long Midnight Publishing HQ in Gstaad, indicate the delay is unrelated to the book itself, but instead to allow the talented marketing operation at LMP to finalise shooting of the Christmas TV advert campaign.

The six-part ad, entitled It’s Not Christmas Until Someone Dies In An Interesting Way In Fiction, will feature the Beatles, David Attenborough, Taylor Swift and Ally McCoist. Insiders are also reporting that the $14m advertising spectacular could see Martin Sheen reprise his West Wing role as President Bartlett, and Robert De Niro appear in a cameo as a benevolent, but baby-eating Santa Claus.

Here’s the blurb (of the novel, not the TV advert):

Set a few months after the terrible events of A LONG DAY'S JOURNEY INTO DEATH, We Were Not Innocent finds Buchan still haunted by the murder of one of his team, but now excluded from the investigation into the activities of the gang who carried out the crime.

A bleak day in November starts badly, with Buchan called to the scene of a murder. There’s a horror movie shooting in a grand old church in the city, and the church officer has been found dead, killed after the fashion of Yael’s murder of Sisera in the Book of Judges.

Once again thrown into the arts world, this time multiplied by religion, Buchan’s troubles are exacerbated by him being called to face an internal inquiry into the events of the previous summer. There is someone on the inside of Police Scotland out to get Buchan, and this latest murder case, and the continuing fallout of the previous one, will come crashing together in another shocking conclusion...
